Application of Capacitive Deionisation to Waste Water

The aim of the project is to develop capacitive deionisation technology for the regeneration of urban and industrial wastewater, fresh and brackish, to efficiently remove dissolved nutrients, in particular ionic species containing nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as sulphates, boron, lithium and arsenic. Capacitive deionisation is a procedure for the removal of dissolved ions by electroadsorption on electrodes with an electrical charge of opposite sign to that of the ions. Capacitive deionisation is presented as a technological alternative to reverse osmosis because it is a low-pressure process that does not require the use of membranes.
